In one of our blog posts last year (see blog here) we introduced you to Laura van der Plas who is a Dutch surf and water photographer. Laura has been travelling around Europe for the last 5 years in order to make stunning surf photos. She frequently visited our surf center in Figueira and made some great footage of the waves around.

Your job would be to work as a surf camp host. It is a very small camp in a family environment with a highly personalised approach working with very small groups. It requires dedication and attention. It sounds like a lot of work but it is actually quite relaxed and you still get a lot of free time for surfing. You would be expected to:
Push house keeping into its next evolutionary stageBe a friendly presence to our guestsOccasionally assist a surf coach (if you wish to develop surf teaching skills)

Laura van der Plas (also known as lauimaui) is the Dutch water and surf photographer behind the concept of Water Works.
Laura is currently living in Zandvoort in the Netherlands. In 2012 she bought her first water-housing and since then she has spent many hours in the Northsea and foreign waters. Laura’s passion for surfing and her love for photography brought her to many destinations in Europe. Both locally and internationally Laura is known for her story telling way and creative work as a photographer.
When you ask why Laura is so attracted to the ocean, she starts to smile and responds: “A dive into the big blue gives me a total reset. It is my physical challenge after a workday at the office. It is my favourite hangout where I catch up with local surf buddies…And at last it became my creative inspiration. In the water people are so pure, so photogenic. I guess it is just because water works…”
Laura sees the importance of sustainability and cares for clean oceans. With her photography she wants to contribute and create awareness for the beauty of the ocean. She wants to further develop this and is especially interested to work on projects that support clean oceans.

Now you are on holidays in Portugal, just got out of bed and you desperately follow the aroma of fresh coffee coming from the bakery down the road. No matter how many places you go to or how many coffees you order, you never seem to get exactly what you were craving for. Don't be surprised if someone in a bakery or "café" doesn't know what globalized names like "latte" or "cappuccino" mean. By the way, an "americano" is a movie with George Clooney. Cultural globalization has found the boundary of Portuguese love for coffee and its traditions. When you travel there is no right or wrong, just different. This is just the tip of the iceberg, but you got to start somewhere!
